AI methods have made enormous progress in recent years and are already part of our everyday life. Accordingly, the demand for qualified AI experts is increasing.

However, the implementation of AI in an industrial context often requires complex approaches that are only achievable through a deeper understanding and higher intelligence concepts.

This is exactly where the AI master's programme comes in: The goal is to train AI experts who can develop and evaluate software systems with strong AI functionality.

Programme Content


The master's programme extends over 3 semesters and, in addition to in-depth knowledge of AI, it provides extensive competencies for the implementation of AI methods and models in practice.

Practical projects and early involvement of students in the work within AI laboratories are integrated into the course of study.

By working in a lab-based environment, students gain an early and intensive insight into methods of scientific work.

Since the use of AI in practice leads to significant changes in society, students also take courses on AI ethics, law and the sociological consequences of AI in order to be able to responsibly shape the transformation process.

Since a large number of potential employers in the AI industry operate globally, students are strongly encouraged to spend time abroad. The faculty supports this through a variety of partnerships with universities abroad.

 

 

Entry Requirements

 

Prospective students of the Master's programme Artificial Intelligence (MAI) have to fulfil the formal requirements for a Master's programme at a German University of Applied Sciences, including the required language qualifications. In addition, we recommend reading the Study and Examination Regulations (SPO), and the module descriptions of the MAI curriculum.

The MAI is a research-oriented Master's programme with substantial requirements in math and computer science. We offer two pre-courses (Math and Python Programming) which can be used to assess and refresh one’s competences. However, The pre-courses are not designed as a substitute for missing competences at Bachelor level in mathematics and computer science.

In terms of mathematical competencies, you are expected to have completed at least four full mathematics modules during your undergraduate studies. These modules should include at least algebra, analysis and stochastic up to a level of a 4th semester math or computer science bachelor programme. Other recommended topics include numerics, mathematical modelling and programming and optimization theory. We refer to the syllabus of the
mathematical pre-course for a more detailed overview of prerequisites.

The first semester includes an AI-related mathematics module to give you a brief refresher and to equalize math competences. However, it cannot replace a basic knowledge of fundamental mathematical concepts.

Regarding computer science competencies, you are expected to have completed at least four full computer science modules during your undergraduate studies. These should cover
substantial applicable knowledge in at least one programming language. You should also have applicable competences in project and team-management as well as software engineering principles. You are expected to be able to implement a software project in a programming language of your choice in a team. Further computer sciences skills also in relation to e.g. sensor systems, robotics, parallel systems or alike are a plus and can be helpful in specializations during the Master’s programme.

MAI will be widely based on python (a lot) and Matlab (in some courses).

You are expected to have at least B2 level in English (writing, reading, speaking, listening). But we recommend strongly a C1 level in English.
All modules, provided material and literature are in English only. Furthermore, a minimum level of A2 in German (for daily life aspects outside of the university) is required. This minimum level can be acquired in the first two semesters of the programme.
